Open water boating has just started nearly 2 weeks ago and it has already been a great season. We’ve landed a ton a monster Walleyes. So far most of the Walleye action has been at Chatfield. The water temp at Chatfield is starting to get warmer (mid 50’s) which has ended the Walleye spawn and we are now seeing migrating fish all over the lake. There is a great day time bite going strong on most of the structure out there. Live bait rigs or jigs fished on contour change are producing fish.
Now for some exciting news. I am now guiding on Cherry Creek. The spawn was a little later at Cherry Creek and the bite which produced a ton of the monster fish at Chatfield is now taking place on Cherry Creek. This lake has some of the biggest Walleyes in the western US if not the whole country. I am very excited to offer trips out there.
The best news of all is the high country lakes are looking good. Ice is melting and breaking up quickly. It looks like Antero will be the first to open. I talked to a very reliable source and so far it looks like most to all of the fish survived the long winter. Antero is always susceptible to winter kill and it was a worry this year but it DID NOT happen. The oxygen levels stayed adequate which will lead to great fishing. Last year’s ice-off fishing was incredible with big numbers and huge fish. Those trout have been growing and get stronger, I can’t even imagine what this year will bring. Whether you’re a fly fisherman or a conventional angler Antero will be the lake to hit this spring.
Spinney and Eleven Mile will also open soon which are sure fire bites in the spring. Everyone knows that trophy Pike is one of my favorite bites and I have been chasing the next state record. I am hoping that the next record enters my boat this year. Last year I was with in a pound a couple of times. Hopefully this year I will be a couple of pounds heavier!
If anyone is interested in a guided trip let me know! I am guiding morning (6am to 12pm) trips as well as afternoon (1pm to 7pm) trips out to all the south park lakes this spring. Out of the 62 trips possible in May there are only 23 left so book yours today. I hope everyone can make it out this spring whether with me or by yourself. I’m looking forward to another great season
